What is screen resolution?

Web sites are designed to fit better into a particular screen size (resolution). If the resolution of your screen is set too high, the Web pages may appear very small on the screen making the information more difficult to see and read. Conversely, if the resolution is set too low for the page, all the information available will not fit on the screen forcing you to have to scroll horizontally to see everything on the page.

Both of these situations can be annoying and therefore setting your screen resolution to match the page layout makes for more pleasant viewing of the Web site.

How to change your screen resolution

Changing the screen resolution of your monitor is a simple and straightforward process.

In Windows XP:

  • Open "Control Panel" (click "Start"/ "Control Panel")

  • Click the "Settings" tab at the top of the window
  • Look for the box that says "Screen Resolution" and drag the slider to the left until the setting reads "800 by 600 pixels".
